Hike to Garnet Rock
By car or bus we head for Tacan, the mountain south of Kangerlussuaq, and enjoy the fantastic view. From Tacan we circle the big salt lake. The walk is mostly downwards, although we can’t avoid climbing a few hills.
After 2½-3 hours of hiking through spectacular landscape with good chances to spot musk oxen, we will find ourselves at Garnet Rock. Now it is time to bring out our hammers and chisels and start our hunt for semi-precious stones, the garnets. In between of our hammering we will have the time to eat our lunch packs.
Peregrine falcons breed at the rock, and we might hear or see them. Musk oxen are also occasional guests in the area. Now that we hopefully have our pockets full of gems, we head back along the shores of beautiful Lake Ferguson. We will probably see the great northern diver nesting by the lake. After passing the lake, we are picked up by a car or bus and taken home.
